Lecturer for Public Lecture #1

Yuan Xie is currently with Alibaba’s DAMO Academy and is Vice President of Alibaba Group. He received BS degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in China, and Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Princeton University. Before joining Alibaba, he was Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), Professor at Pennsylvania State University, with AMD Research and was with IBM Microelectronics as an Advisory Engineer. Yuan Xie is a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and AAAS. He was also inducted to the Hall of Fame in ISCA/MICRO/HPCA, which are the premier computer architecture conferences. He has authored 4 books, published more than 300 IEEE/ACM journal/conference papers in the areas of computer architecture, VLSI design, and EDA.

Prof. Hoi-Jun Yoo is is an IEEE fellow and ICT Chair professor of School of Electrical Engineering and the director of the System Design Innovation and Application Research Center (SDIA) at KAIST.

Prof. Yoo served as a member for the Executive Committee of ISSCC, Symposium on VLSI, and A-SSCC, the TPC Chair for the A-SSCC 2008 and ISWC 2010, the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from 2010 to 2011, the Far East Chair for the ISSCC from 2011 to 2012, the Technology Direction Sub-Committee Chair for the ISSCC in 2013, the TPC Vice Chair for the ISSCC in 2014, and the TPC Chair for the ISSCC in 2015. He is the Chair of Steering Committee of A-SSCC (2020-2024) and was a Plenary Speaker of ISSCC 2019.

H.-S. Philip Wong is the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. He joined Stanford University as Professor of Electrical Engineering in September, 2004. From 1988 to 2004, he was with the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. From 2018 to 2020, he was on leave from Stanford and was the Vice President of Corporate Research at TSMC, the largest semiconductor foundry in the world. Since 2020, he has been the Chief Scientist of TSMC. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and received the IEEE Electron Devices Society J.J. Ebers Award for “pioneering contributions to the scaling of silicon devices and technology.” He is the founding Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford SystemX Alliance – an industrial affiliate program focused on building systems, and the faculty director of the Stanford Non-Volatile Memory Technology Research Initiative (NMTRI).

Dr. Zhongrui Wang is an assistant professor with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. Prior to joining HKU, he received both B. Eng (First-class honour) and Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He did his post-doctoral research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research interest lies in emerging memory based neuromorphic computing and machine learning.

Dr. Can Li is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), working on analog and neuromorphic computing accelerators based on post-CMOS emerging devices (e.g. memristors), for efficient machine/deep learning, network security, signal processing, etc. Before that, He spent two years at Hewlett Packard Labs in Palo Alto, California, and obtained his Ph.D. from University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and B.S./M.S. from Peking University. He is a recipient of the RGC Early Career Awards (HKSAR) and NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund Award.

Qiming Shao received his Bachelor’s degree in 2013 from Tsinghua University and his Ph.D. in 2019 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His lab aims to realize energy and time-efficient hardware for physical and quantum intelligence. His research interests are novel electronic and spintronic materials and structures for memory, neuromorphic and quantum computing applications. His research works are published in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences, including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Electronics, Nature Communications, Nano Letters, and International Electron Device Meeting. He is a recipient of the IEEE Magnetics Society Early Career Award, UCLA Distinguished PhD Dissertation Award, 2018-2019 Dissertation Year Fellowship, and 2019 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad. He was the chair of the IEEE Hong Kong Joint Chapter of Electron Devices and Solid-State Circuits from 2020 to 2021. He is now the Treasurer of the IEEE Hong Kong Magnetics Chapter.

Prof. Mansun Chan received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. Subsequently, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and he is now the Alex Wong Siu Wah Gigi Wong Fook Chi Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. He was one of the major contributors to the unified BSIM model for SPICE, which has been accepted by most US companies and the Compact Model Council (CMC) as the first industrial standard MOSFET model. His current research interests include emerging nano-device technologies, 2-D device for flexible electronics, CMOS interconnect technology, Artificial Neural Network systems, new-generation memory technology, BioNEMS, device modeling and ultra-low power circuit techniques. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE and Fellow of IEEE.

Prof. Tsui obtained his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Hong Kong, and MS and PhD degrees in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California. Prof Tsui received the IEEE Transactions on VLSI System Best Paper Award in 1995. He also supervised the best student paper award of IEEE ISCAS in 1999. He has reviewed several IEEE transactions and journals, and he served on the organization committee of ASP-DAC’99 and program committees of IEEE ISLPE, VLSI, ASP-DAC and other conferences. He also consulted for local and multinational companies. He is an IEEE member.

Prof. Wei Zhang is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Her current research interests focus on reconfigurable computing and hardware acceleration, embedded system, power and energy management, etc. She authored over 120 technical papers in referred international journals and conferences and won the best paper award in ISVLSI 2009 and ICCAD 2017. She serves as Associate Editor of several Transactions, such as TRETS, TVLSI, TCAD, etc.

Boris Murmann (鲍瑞思) is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He joined Stanford in 2004 after completing his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. From 1994 to 1997, he was with Neutron Microelectronics, Germany, where he developed low-power and smart-power ASICs. Since 2004, he has worked as a consultant with numerous Silicon Valley companies. Dr. Murmann’s research interests are in mixed-signal integrated circuit design, with an emphasis on sensor interfaces, data converters, high-speed communication, and machine learning. He received the 2009 Agilent Early Career Professor Award, the 2012 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by the Humboldt Foundation, and the 2021 SIA-SRC University Researcher Award for lifetime research contributions to the U.S. semiconductor industry. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dr. Weiwen Jiang joined the ECE department at George Mason University as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2021. He was a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Notre Dame. He received the Ph.D. degree from Chongqing University in 2019. From 2017 to 2019, he was a research scholar at the University of Pittsburgh. His research works have won Best Paper Awards in IEEE TCAD’21, ICCD’17, and NVMSA’15. He is the receipt of four Best Paper Nominations in ASP-DAC’16, DAC’19, CODES+ISSS’19, ASP-DAC’20, and the Top Winning Awards at IEEE Services Hackathon.

Yuzhe Ma is an Assistant Professor at the Microelectronics Thrust of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) . Previously, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Huawei Hong Kong Research Center. He received Ph.D. degree in 2020 from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and received Bachelor degree from Sun Yat-Sun University in 2016. His research interests are in the cross-disciplinary study of VLSI electronic design automation and machine learning. He is a recipient of the Best Paper Awards at ICCAD 2021, ASPDAC 2021, and ICTAI 2019.

His research interests include cross-disciplinary topics in electronic design automation, VLSI design, and machine learning, especially machine learning for circuit design.

Dr. Shin Cheul KIM is Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer) and CEO of HKUST R&D Corporation Limited.

He has a successful track record in Innovation and Entrepreneurship development. He served as Director of TTO, Managing Director of Versitech Limited, and founding Director of iDendron at The University of Hong Kong. He served as a Senior VP at Exploit Technologies Pte. Ltd, a commercialization arm for the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) of Singapore, where he commercialized more than 300 technologies, created dozens of startups, and sizable collaborations. The key projects included Si-Photonics Foundry, MEMS, Nanoimprinting Foundry, Display, Advanced material, and Bio-Medical technologies. He was a founding member of NESS Display Co. Ltd and Managing Director of NESS Display Singapore Pte. Ltd, which commercialized OLED using a self-developed linear evaporation system for the first time in the world.

Laura Swan is a Managing Partner at Silicon Catalyst LLC, and Vice President of Operations at Silicon Catalyst Angels Inc. She spent her early career working as an engineer in several network equipment startups. Laura has a thorough understanding of the engineering development process (functional specification, system/architecture design, development, testing, and deployment) based on her years of software/firmware development and program management.

Laura is also the leader of the Silicon Catalyst University program, driving the collaboration between the Advisor ecosystem and academic researchers, to investigate commercialization paths for their innovations. Laura has been an angel investor and advisor at Sand Hill Angels, The Batchery and Silicon Catalyst Angels.

Kenny Oktavius is the Co-Founder & CEO of PointFit Tech. He obtained his BEng. in Chemical Engineering and MPhil degree in Technology, Leadership and Entrepreneurship (TLE) on 2021 from HKUST. During his time in HKUST, he started his research on Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene nanomembrane together with Prof. Ping Gao (HKUST) for biosensor application. That advanced material is then become the core tech for PointFit sweat sensor which has received numerous funding supports and prestigious recognitions from HKUST Entrepreneurship Centre, HKSTP, HK Government and many more.

Guoliang Xing is currently a Professor of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Previously, he was a faculty member at Michigan State University. He received the D.Sc. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, in 2006. He received three Best Paper Awards and six Best Paper Nominations at leading international conferences. His research interests include Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Health, Cyber-Physical Systems, security, and wireless networking. He has led several multi-disciplinary research projects on smart health systems for activity recognition, family wellness, and sleep/breathing monitoring. Several mobile health technologies developed in his lab won Best App Awards at the MobiCom conference and were successfully transferred to the industry. He received the U.S. NSF CAREER Award in 2010 and the Withrow Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State University in 2014. He has published 150+ papers which have been cited for 10,000+. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Yu Wang is the Professor of the Department of Electronics Engineering at Tsinghua University, and serving as the chair of the Department of Electronics Engineering and the vice dean of the School of Information Science and Technology at Tsinghua University. He has published more than 70 journals and 200 conference papers in the areas of EDA, FPGA, VLSI design, and embedded systems, with a focus on brain inspired computing, application specific heterogeneous computing, parallel circuit analysis, and power and reliability aware system design methodology. He has received four best paper awards and ten best paper nominations. He is currently serving as an editorial board member of ACM TODAES, IEEE TCAD and other important journals in the field. He is a recipient of ACM/SIGDA Meritorious Service Award in 2020 and Under-40 Innovators Award at DAC in 2018. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a senior member of the ACM.

Wayne Luk is Professor of Computer Engineering with Imperial College and the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in High Performance Embedded and Distributed Systems, and was a Visiting Professor with Stanford University. His research focuses on theory and practice of customizing hardware and software designs, especially those involving artificial intelligence acceleration for specific application domains, such as high energy physics, computational finance, and bioinformatics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE, and the BCS.
